Become a Volunteer
Over 300 individuals volunteer at Newton annually and we continue to grow!
The mission of the Volunteer Services Department is to:
- provide an adequate and competent in-service volunteer staff whose services augment those of the hospital personnel and benefit the patient, family, and visitor;
- assure the highest quality of supplemental help by carefully screening and training each applicant for a special assignment;
- provide a learning experience for volunteers to justify their time and energy; and
- Identify and respond to our community's changing needs by placement of volunteers into community outreach programs.
Requirements
- Volunteers must be age 18 or over
- Volunteers are asked to complete a minimum of 4 hours in one time slot per week for a period of 6 months to one year
- Most new openings are weekdays before 5 p.m.
- Processing time is usually 2 months
Areas of Service
Two extremely important and essential work areas are:
The Hospitality Shop - This involves serving in the restaurant or at the cash register in the gift shop.
The Bee Hive Thrift Shop - Owned and managed by the Auxiliary, the shop is operated by volunteer help out of its building at 123 Spring Street in Newton.

How to Begin
- Click here to view the Volunteer Application & Agreement. Print out both documents. Or contact the Volunteer Services Department at (973) 579-8370 and ask for an application.
- Complete and return the application and agreement.
- Set up an interview with volunteer staff.
- Attend a 4 hour orientation and training session
- Complete the following health screening:
A current Tuberculosis test provided by the hospital free of charge.
