The Charles L. Tice Heart Center for Diagnostic Services:
Pacemaker Follow-Up
Pacemaker implantation is the surgical placement of a pacemaker generator and lead system to correct slow heart rates. The pacemaker will detect when the heart rate is too slow and will stimulate the heart to increase to an appropriate rate.
After pacemakers are inserted, pacemaker follow-up visits are required. Pacemakers are followed via the telephone every 1 - 2 months. A complete follow-up is done in the Newton Medical Center Pacemaker Clinic or in the physician's office once or twice per year. The complete follow-up takes approximately 30 minutes. Cardiologists utilize this information to assure pacemakers are functioning at their optimal level, and as an indicator for when the pacemaker battery is low or needs replacement.
