NEWTON – Join Newton Memorial Hospital Nov. 22 for the 17th Annual Festival of Lights, the premiere local event that signals the start of the holiday season.
Thousands of holiday lights adorning rows of evergreen trees that line Newton Memorial Hospital’s south entrance will be illuminated that evening, in what is known as one of the warmest holiday traditions in the community.
Each twinkling light represents a loved one and, cumulatively, the lights help to beautify the hospital’s idyllic campus during the holiday season.
Former Newton Memorial Hospital Foundation Trustee C. Edward McCracken began the tradition 17 years ago as a way to brighten the holidays for patients and their families during time spent at the hospital. It began as a relatively small event and has grown to a major local fundraiser that helps raise thousands of dollars, which the Foundation uses to enhance services at the Hospital.
Made possible by Smith-McCracken/Wood Funeral Home, Festival of Lights offers opportunities to remember a loved one with a donation to light an entire tree or contribute a single string of lights. The traditional lighting ceremony will be preceded by a reception, and followed by a spectacular firework’s display sponsored by Bell BMW.
All proceeds will go to benefit a renovation of the hospital’s Single-Room Maternity unit, the first phase of which is currently underway.
Other sponsors include Atlantic Ambulance Corporation, Athenia Mason Supply Ken & Ann Kievit, Cohn Benefits Consultants, the Ernest Ratti Family, GRM Facilities Management, Inc., R. Poust, Inc., and Ronetco Supermarkets, Inc.
Contributor’s names will be recorded in a Festival of Light’s Tribute Book and on a Recognition Board inside the hospital’s Main Entrance.
To purchase lights or order tickets, please call the Foundation office at (973) 579-8309.
