NEWTON – Stuart Kaufman, M.D., a Board Certified Pediatric Cardiologist, is now seeing pediatric patients at the Charles L. Tice Heart Center for Diagnostic Services at Newton Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Kaufman is Director of Pediatric Echocardiography at the Children’s Heart Center at Goryeb Children’s Hospital, Morristown Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Kaufman will utilize the technology at the Tice Heart Center to identify and diagnose children with congenital heart defects and, if necessary, suggest additional treatment at Goryeb Children’s Hospital.

“We’re very pleased that Dr. Kaufman will allow us to expand our cardiac services to children and bring pediatric cardiology closer to the residents we proudly serve each day,” said David Lazarus, M.D., Newton Memorial’s Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Medical Affairs.

Dr. Kaufman will use existing technology at the Tice Heart Center to also perform fetal echocardiograms, a diagnostic procedure not currently available in Newton Memorial’s primary service area. Fetal echocardiograms are prenatal procedures that allow physicians to view the vessels and chambers surrounding the hearts of unborn children.

“For mothers who are 20 weeks pregnant or greater, we can pick up 80 to 90 percent of severe congenital heart defects,” said Dr. Kaufman. “Statistics show that undiagnosed congenital heart defects result in higher mortality rates for babies, which is why I am eager to ensure this service is available at Newton Memorial Hospital. It truly is lifesaving work.”

Dr. Kaufman received his undergraduate degree in Biology from the State University of New York at Buffalo and his medical degree from Medical College of Pennsylvania. He spent his residency years at North Shore Medical Center in Long Island, N.Y.
