Hospitalist Medicine Program
The Hospitalist Medicine Program at Newton Memorial Hospital is comprised of a team of physicians who provide round-the-clock specialized care to hospitalized patients. A Hospitalist is a physician trained in internal medicine or family medicine who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. Hospitalist Program physicians focus exclusively on the care of patients admitted to Newton Memorial Hospital. As such, these physicians do not maintain private practices or office hours.
At Newton Memorial, hospitalized patients are referred by their primary care physicians and specialists to the Hospitalist program for care. In addition, the Hospitalists care for any hospitalized patients who do not have a primary care physician. The Hospitalists at Newton Memorial Hospital provide 24-hour-7-days-a-week service.

Hospitalists manage each patient’s course through the hospital, ordering diagnostic imaging studies and laboratory tests, and closely monitoring the patient’s progress. All the while, Hospitalists remain in close contact with your primary care physician, communicating test results and discussing whether additional diagnostic testing is necessary.
When a patient is preparing to leave Newton Memorial Hospital, the Hospitalist will prepare a discharge plan, including written and verbal instructions and any necessary prescriptions. This plan will also include appointments for follow-up with a primary care physician and relevant specialists.
