Hospitalist Medicine Program:

Benefits to You and Your Family

  • Hospitalists practice exclusively on-site at Newton Memorial Hospital, which means they are present to answer your questions regarding care. You no longer have to wait for your primary care physician to make rounds to get answers;

  • Hospitalists are more familiar than primary care physicians with the application and coordination of care for common acute disorders. Hospitalists are able to recognize and diagnose unusual disorders, anticipate problems and rapidly respond to crises or changes in a patient’s condition;

  • Hospitalists provide better continuity of care for the patient by improving communication in "shift handoffs" between the day and evening nursing staff, and coordinating what is sometimes as many as 50 to 100 people who are involved in the care of hospitalized patients;
  • Their relationships inside the hospital enable hospitalists to know the best ways to expedite and improve care within the environment. They are familiar with the key individuals throughout the hospital, including medical and surgery consultants, discharge planners, clergy and others. This means shorter wait times and quicker discharges; and

  • Hospitalists can better facilitate care with post-acute providers, such as home health care, skilled nursing care, specialized rehabilitation and others.
